Turkish SAR trials sail ahead

Tuesday, 22 February, 2011

Turkish SAR trials sail aheadRMK Marine (Hall 10, Stand D10), part of the Koç Group, is moving forward with its programme to construct four new 88m search and rescue (SAR) vessels for the Turkish Coast Guard.

The single largest military ship contract ever awarded to a Turkish private sector shipyard, the 1,700-ton displacement Coast Guard SAR Ship is derived from Fincantieri’s Sirio class offshore patrol vessel design. It has a number of specific role modifications associated with its SAR mission, and incorporates a high degree of local content in terms of systems and equipment.

First-of-class TCGS Dost began sea trials in January 2011 and will be handed over later this year.

The second vessel, TCGS Güven, was launched from RMK Marine’s Tuzla shipyard in December 2010, with the remaining two ships, TCSG Umut and TCSG Yasam, to follow down the slipway later in 2011. All four are due to be handed over by the end of 2012.

RMK Marine is eyeing opportunities to expand its naval business. It is preparing a bid for the Turkish Naval Forces Command’s projected landing platform dock ship, and is positioning itself to capture orders for the build of follow-on MILGEM corvettes.
