Greek Strikes Likely to Further Disturb Border

| 04 February 2010 |

The Sofia Echo reports that all border crossings, except Zlatograd, between Greece and Bulgaria are currently blocked. The Zlatograd crossing point cannot be used by lorries.
In signs of more trouble for lorries and individuals looking to cross the Greek-Bulgarian border, the Greek border police threatened to strike on February 4 and 5.

Greek border police have threatened to close all border checkpoints for the next two days, the Sofia Echo reports.

The act would not be directly related to the striking farmers, who are in their third week of blocking the border crossings, but it would add to the ongoing problems Bulgaria is having with Greece because of the effects of the blockades.

The border police and the Greek government police see differently on a number of issues, including taxation.

Bulgarian media reported yesterday that the border police had announced plans for a total blockade on Thursday and Friday.  As of Thursday morning, most of the crossings were operational, but indications were that that would not be the case for the rest of the day.

Since midnight on Wednesday, checkpoints Ilinden, Zlatograd and Captain P Voivoda had been letting traffic through. Authorities in Bulgaria did say there was reason to believe the Ilinden-Exohi checkpoint would most likely close this morning.

The Kulata-Promahon checkpoint is reported to be blocked again. From 10 p.m. last night until 3 a.m. this morning, all vehicles were allowed to pass through, including the 1,250 lorries that had been waiting to cross.

On February 3, Jose Manuel Barosso, the president of the European Commission, said the EC would do everything it could to make sure goods and services were not halted at the border. He said the EC would use “all legal means possible”.

Greek border police gave the Foreign Ministry in Macedonia an official warning about the plan to strike. Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said it did not receive the warning.

Ministries in some countries, including Romania and Macedonia, are warning their citizens not to travel to Greece because of the blockade.
