Albanian cabinet backs investigations against lawmakers, ministers

TIRANA, Albania — The government has voiced readiness to strip immunity from any parliamentary member or minister, should they face legal proceedings. “Every request from legal institutions to remove a lawmaker’s immunity will be accepted,” Prime Minister Sali Berisha said on Saturday (October 24th), reacting to calls from the US and British embassies in Tirana to do more in this area.

The parliamentary majority led by Berisha’s ruling Democratic Party has insisted that it is impossible to adopt such a law given the absence of the opposition. The Socialist Party has been boycotting parliament to protest what it describes as the “manipulation” of the June general elections.

At the same time, the SP and other opposition parties have criticised the government for obstructing legal proceedings against cabinet members accused of corruption

BELGRADE — Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjić says Serbian companies should participate in the tender for the privatization of a portion of Montenegro’s port of Bar.

He said that the port would give the Serbian industries access to the Adriatic Sea.

Mrkonjić stated that this would be in the best interest of Serbia, adding that Russian businesspeople have shown interest in investing in several Serbian ports, and that the corridor from Belgrade to Bar and the Bar port is an “inseparable package”.

“At this moment, the Russians will not participate in the tender for the sale of a part of the Bar port, but they agree with us and are interested in the railroad from Belgrade to Bar and the construction of a highway,” Mrkonjić said, adding that a lot of money needs to be invested in the Bar port so that it cold service larger ships.

He said that Serbia has the support of Romania, Italy, Montenegro, Hungary, the Republic od Srpska and all of Bosnia-Herzegovina for a joint participation in the tender, “because the Bar port and Belgrade-Bar railroad were designed for all of Southeast Europe to use”.

Mrkonjić reminded that several days ago a tender was announced for the sale of 54.05 percent of the shares of Bar-based company Container Terminal and General Cargo, along with 30 years of concessions with the obligation to make further investments.

Tenders have also been announced for the sale of the Maritime Affairs (Pomorski poslovi) company and the Security and Fire Prevention (Obezbeđenje i protivpožarna zaštita) that belong to the Bar port, with 30-year concessions as well.
