Show Theater in Griechenland: Man leitet nun Korruptions Verfahren gegen Beamte ein

Korruptionsverfahren gegen fast 400 Beamte eingeleitet

(APA/AFP)

The Supreme Rada (parliament) of Ukraine has decided to appoint Valentin Nalyvaychenko the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), news agency UNIAN reports. 230 members of parliament, among them 149 members from Yulia Tymoshenko block, voted to support the decision. The President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko once again brought to the parliament his representation on appointment of Nalyvaychenko as the SBU chairman, news agency notes.
In particular, factions have voted for appointment of Valentin Nalivaychenko the SUB head as follows: Party of the Regions – 0, Yulia Tymoshenko block – 149, Our Ukraine

– People’s Self-Defense (OU-PSD) – 61, the Communist party of Ukraine – 0, The Litvin Bloc – 20, according to online paper MIGNews.
Nalyvaychenko who has been referred to Yushchenko’s team, has been in the status of acting SBU head already since December, 2006. The president repeatedly brought his candidacy for the full confirmation in the post, however, the parliament members every time rejected it. This time less than 20 minutes were spent on consideration of the question.
The parliament has also approved in the first reading the amendment to the corresponding law directed on depriving President Yushchenko of influence on the SBU. According to the bill the acting SBU chairman should be appointed and dismissed by the Supreme Rada according to suggestion of not less than one third of parliament members.
The faction of Yulia Tymoshenko block, which recently has been rather critical to Nalyvaychenko, at the session under presidency of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko made a decision to support his nomination.
According to chairman of Yulia Tymoshenko Block faction, Ivan Kirilenko, such decision was adopted in connection with the last events around Naftogaz Ukrainy company, «when the SBU has been supervised by nobody». «Voting for Nalyvaychenko we at once made a decision to clarify the personnel situation, to understand what is going on there», said Kirilenko. He added that after appointment of Nalyvaychenko to this post the Yulia Tymoshenko Block was going to promote legislative regulation of the SBU work. Other parliament member from Yulia Tymoshenko Block, Sergei Vlasenko, stated that „owing to efforts of Nalyvaychenko and his intervention in the case around Naftogaz Ukrainy” it was possible to implement the ruling of Shevchenko district court regarding the company………….

Is Romania spy scandal a part of large-scale operation?
Romanian Court is going to try the appeal filed by the Bulgarian national Petar Zikulov, who is charged with espionage, Sofia News Agency reports. Zikulov is currently detained for 29 days, the maximum period under Romanian law.
Zikulov and Floricel Achim, a Romanian warrant officer, were arrested in Bucharest on March 2,

on charges of espionage and treason. They have been accused of leaking military secrets to a third country that was not an EU and NATO member.
There are fears that the scandal can grow in case NATO information has been involved. Romanian authorities are investigating the possibility and said that if they establish leaks of NATO classified data, they would immediately notify the Alliance.
The Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Council in the Bulgarian city of Sliven and former officer of the Bulgarian State Security (DS), Marin Kavrukov, said in a special interview for Darik Radio that he knew Zikulov in person and confirmed he was a close relative of the former Chief of the Bulgarian Military Intelligence during the Communist regime, General Vladimir Zikulov.
“I know Peter Zikulov personally,” Marin Kavrakov said in the interview: “He was attached about a year ago to the group of the First main directorate of the DS, because the structure of developing military intelligence had no positions in the district centres. Zikulov implementing routine actions on studying of contingent of „operationally interesting” people and contacts, which is a normal activity for the beginner officer of intelligence and counterintelligence. He formally served in the Parachute Battalion, which had an Intelligence unit. Most of the personnel studied also in the special course of military intelligence in military school of Veliko Tyrnovo. Career of a military attache is a good development for the military intelligence officer, but the fact that he worked in a nearby country that is not an active region means that a lot had to learn more to move to a NATO member-country where requirements and the selection should be higher. If his career had developed properly, after Romania he probably would work in another country as a military attache, or return to the leadership’s Analysis Centre”.

Macedonian Police Seize Dozens Of Stolen Ancient Artifacts After Raids On Smugglers

The Associated Press

SKOPJE, Macedonia

Authorities have seized dozens of stolen ancient artifacts after raiding the homes of two suspected antiquities smugglers in southern Macedonia.

Police confiscated about 70 archaeological items, including coins, terracotta figurines, pieces of silver and bronze jewelry and amphora dating from the Hellenistic and Roman periods in the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C., police spokesman Ivo Kotevski said Wednesday.

They are believed to have been stolen from Isar, one of Macedonia’s largest archaeological sites in the south.

Isar, in southeastern Macedonia, has been identified as the site of the ancient city of Idomenae. Archaeologists have found traces of habitation there from the 6th century B.C. until Roman times, and an ancient cemetery excavated in the area contained burials from the 10th century B.C.

The artifacts were found in the homes of two brothers who had previous convictions for antiquities smuggling, Kotevski said.

Macedonia has some 6,000 registered archaeological sites. Experts warn that since the country gained independence from Yugoslavia 17 years ago, the antiquities have become increasingly vulnerable to looters who use sophisticated navigation and excavating equipment.

Vasil Bollano Greek Mayor of Himari and the law and court in Albania

Albania Seeks Jail for Ethnic Greek Mayor

Tirana | 10 March 2009 |

Vasil Bollano

Vasil Bollano

A prosecutor has sought a one year prison term and a 5 million lek (€38000) fine from an ethnic Greek mayor in Albania who was indicted after he ordered the dismantling of road signs because they were not bilingual, causing subsequent traffic chaos.
Mayor Vasil Bollano from the town of Himara on Albania’s coast, ordered the removal of the signs in December 2007 arguing that the signs should have also been in Greek, because he considers the area a Greek minority zone.

The removal of the signs caused road chaos because they were along a section of Albania’s coast which is very popular with tourists. Prosecutors have filed charges against Bollano for abuse of power, arguing that his actions were against the law and that the traffic chaos cost Albanian taxpayers roughly €170,000.

Bollano’s statements have got him in hot water before. He has previously declared large swathes of southern Albania are Greek land and claimed autonomy for the area.

Estimates of the Greek minority in Albania range from three to seven per cent of the total population.

Tirana has also turned down his demands for special status, arguing that the size of the local Greek community is too small for the area to warrant such a status. At the same time, Tirana treads carefully with the mayor, mindful of its powerful neighbour to the south.

However, the government’s softly-softly approach has angered some Albanians who feel Tirana has been too lenient on Bollano. They have been infuriated by his warnings that if the authorities make any moves against him, Albania’s EU aspirations will be compromised.

That Greece is host to Albania’s largest emigrant community in Europe, and that their remittances are a lifeline for its weak economy, especially in the south, is another factor in the equation. Although Athens broadly supports Albania’s goal of eventual EU and NATO membership, it has shown it is ready to use the fate of the almost countless Albanian immigrants in Greece as a pawn when the going gets tough.
